# first-person record

Close attention is the through-line.

I’m James Allister Odd, a Pacific Northwest-based investigator, digital-forensics examiner, interdisciplinary researcher, photographer, and author. I lead NTRLNK, an Oregon investigative and forensic practice serving attorneys, organizations, insurers, and private clients. My work combines traditional investigation, digital forensics, evidence review, witness and records development, and litigation support to determine what the available evidence reliably establishes.

I founded OMAT Institute to develop testable frameworks at the meeting point of music, cognition, and information. Its current work centers on the proposed Musical Aptitude Triad: tonal, performative, and expressive dimensions, a separate developmental-magnitude concept, exploratory tools, and a public program for validation.

Ariodd is my solo music and art project, bringing drums, composition, visual art, and sound design into released recordings, official videos, and the interactive Odd Machine.

I also make photographs while walking through the Pacific Northwest—small, unplanned moments guided by attention rather than intention, all made with a Leica Q2. Through Montagu Odd, I bring together The American Guide to the Laws of Cricket with a deliberately conservative account of the surviving Odd family cricket-making record.

Professional background

My professional work spans 16+ years across licensed private investigation, criminal and civil investigations, litigation support, digital forensics, complex evidence analysis, federal program leadership, and expert-witness work.

My doctoral research examined litigation-technology literacy among attorneys; my MPhil research examined organizational adaptation within regulatory frameworks. Together, that work informs an evidence-focused practice built around reliable methods, clear reporting, and conclusions proportionate to the record.

NTRLNK

What does the evidence actually establish?

I lead NTRLNK, a Salem-based Oregon investigative and forensic practice serving attorneys, organizations, insurers, and private clients. The practice accepts focused assignments as well as complex matters, combining traditional investigation with digital-evidence analysis and independent forensic review.

The work begins with the question that must be answered. Witness accounts, records, reports, communications, device or cloud evidence, and timelines are evaluated for reliability, corroboration, missing context, and reasonable alternative explanations—not simply collected and repeated.

Each engagement receives direct senior-level oversight, with scope, specialist involvement, and reporting matched to the matter. Deliverables may include interview reports, investigative memoranda, forensic findings, evidentiary timelines, executive summaries, or comprehensive reports designed for practical use by counsel and decision-makers.

# independent research

OMAT Institute

How can musicianship be mapped without reducing it to one score?

I founded OMAT Institute as an independent research program in music, information, and cognition. Its central proposal, the Musical Aptitude Triad, describes musicianship through three distinct but interdependent domains: Tonal structure and perception, Performative execution and coordination, and Expressive interpretation and communication. A separate Developmental Expansion Index is intended to describe accumulated breadth and depth without changing a musician’s proportional Triad position.

The public site turns that proposal into inspectable tools. Prototype 05 combines a balanced 90-item Triad instrument—79 behavior statements and 11 listening tasks—with 12 separately scored magnitude items. An Ensemble Planner compares two to eight profiles as a browser-local conversation and rehearsal worksheet, while the instrument record publishes scoring rules, audio provenance, privacy boundaries, release history, limitations, and the research still required.

The framework is also presented in The Hidden Shape of Music: The Three Sides of Musicianship — A Theoretical Model, a 2026 first-edition paperback from Corso Publishing. The questionnaire remains an exploratory self-reflection and instrument-development tool—not a validated, normed, diagnostic, predictive, or selection-ready assessment.

Montagu Odd

What survives when craft becomes memory?

Montagu Odd brings together my cricket writing and the surviving record of the Odd family’s bat-making work. I wrote The American Guide to the Laws of Cricket for American readers who want the game’s laws, language, and logic explained without a lifetime around the boundary. Corso Publishing first published the book in 2024; as of August 2026, the site describes a new edition as forthcoming, with distribution still to be confirmed.

The dated record includes an 1884 directory listing Odd & Sons as cricket-bat and stump makers at 16 Whitehorse Road, Croydon; K. S. Ranjitsinhji’s 1897 account naming Odd among makers whose articles he used; and a 1910 advertisement for cricket goods, new blades, and repairs from North End, Croydon.

Later claims are labeled more cautiously. Local histories record Montagu Odd taking over the concern, by then established in Sutton, in 1917; local and club accounts place the family business’s closure in 1977; and company history connects his 1894 search for English willow with bats supplied to W. G. Grace. Those remain recorded accounts while primary papers are sought.

Ariodd

What changes when a recording becomes an instrument?

Ariodd is my solo music and art project, bringing together drums, composition, visual art, and sound design. Its public site is a listening room for the current SoundCloud stream, a selected released catalog, and three official videos.

At its center is the Odd Machine, an interactive effects processor built around eight Ariodd source recordings. A listener can choose a recording and reshape it through seven linked controls for harmonic drive, filtering, delay, convolution space, stereo motion, amplitude pulse, and speed and pitch, with Original, Erode, Orbit, and Void as starting presets.

The catalog currently highlighted includes In Medias Res (album, 2021), Where Are You Now (single, 2023), and Rock Me Amadeus (single, 2023). Direct links connect the project to Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube.
